Metallica and Lady Gaga‘s “Moth Into Flame” team-up was one of the biggest bummers from this year’s Grammys as a “technical snafu” plagued the promising performance. However, the collaboration goes off without a hitch in a new dress rehearsal video that Lady Gaga uploaded Friday.
The much-anticipated Grammy night performance was marred when a stagehand accidentally unplugged the wire to James Hetfield’s microphone prior to the band taking the stage. Gaga’s dress rehearsal video captures what the “Moth Into Flame” would have looked and sounded like with a working mic, minus the Grammy audience.
“Mic Into Flame?,” the band wrote in a note to fans. “Ok, our little Grammy … hiccup … wasn’t that dramatic. But it still left all of us wondering, ‘What if?’ To answer that question and do justice to what we felt was an inspiring collaboration, we decided to share footage from earlier that day when all cylinders were firing just right.”
As Lars Ulrich explained to Rolling Stone after the performance, “There was a slight technical snafu, but that’s not really something you can do much about. You just learn to live with that side of it. It happened to Adele last year; I guess this year it was our turn.”
However, the drummer told James Corden the evening after Music’s Biggest Night that Hetfield was “livid” in the band’s dressing room.
The technical mishap also ruined the one-off collaboration with Gaga, who Ulrich called the “quintessential perfect fifth member of this band.”
“Her voice, her attitude, her outlook on everything is so awesome,” Ulrich added. “[The performance] was so effortless and organic and she just has the spirit of hard rock and metal flowing through her veins. It comes really easy for her. There’s nothing contrived; she just has this super warm, easy energy.”Share
