It’s been an impressive week for new music. From old rockers changing their ways to massive collaborations and goodbyes, the past seven days have seen songs strike at our hearts, minds, and souls from all angles.
Macklemore & Kesha — “Good Old Days”
Macklemore has just dropped Gemini, his first solo album in 12 years. Earlier this week he gave us a tantalizing preview of the record via a collaboration with Kesha. On “Good Old Days”, the two stars cover ancient history, Kesha singing the hook while Macklemore walks us back through his early days touring, working, drinking, and hoping. The song’s reminiscence of simpler days is something we all can understand during these complex and anxiety-filled times.
Morrissey — “Spent the Day in Bed”
We’re a couple months away from the November 17th release of Morrissey’s new album, Low in High School, but already it seems the old dog has learned some new tricks. This week he made his first tweet, which also turned out to be his first foray into the world of teasing new music on social media. What seemed like an old guy’s lazy admission ended up being the title of a new song, “Spent the Day in Bed”, advocating to listeners the pleasures of just staying in bed and ignoring the news. It seems an odd message coming from a man who just dipped his first toe into the 24-hour news cycle, but this is another classic political track from an artist who refuses to be censored.
Wolf Alice — “Heavenward”
It seems like it’s only a matter of time until Wolf Alice break through on this side of the pond. Their debut album, My Love Is Cool, peaked at number two on the U.K charts, and next week, their sophomore LP is set to once again reach for the top. This week they shared a fourth song from the upcoming album. “Heavenward” finds the band at their full shoegazing potential, filling space with enough sound to lift an audience’s eyes off the floor, but then cutting out to Ellie Rowsell’s sweet uplifting vocals. With the new track, Wolf Alice continues to prove that they can do just about anything on the highest level.
Maggie Rogers — “Split Stone”
It’s sad to find out we’ll have to say goodbye to Maggie Rogers for a bit, but we’re sure her break will end with even better music for our ears. On Wednesday, the singer-songwriter delivered her parting gift, “Split Stone”, along with a farewell message. The track is another stunner from an artist who’s grabbed the music world’s attention over the past year and a half, and a kind gesture from a future superstar. Till next time, Maggie.
Miley Cyrus — “Week Without You”
Next week, Miley Cyrus drops her new album, Younger Now. She’s already unveiled two songs from the album, the title track and “Malibu”. Yesterday she delivered “Week Without You”. It’s a classic breakup tune that finds the singer returning to her country roots once more. Or more so, as Miley puts it, “People have been asking me, ‘is this like a re-introduction of yourself?’ But it’s not that at all. Actually, it’s more like, I am this person who embraces all my past selves. This album is the most me for right now that I can be.”
