Lorde is the latest guest on “Song Exploder,” the podcast where Hrishikesh Hirway asks musicians to break down their songs and how they were made. She broke down her song “Sober” from her recent Melodrama album, discussing her creative process with Jack Antonoff, recruiting Frank Ocean producer Malay, sampling her own vocals, and more. Lorde goes deep on her vocal writing and recording workflow, revealing the different layers found on the track.

At one point, Lorde reveals that the horn arrangement of “Sober” was deeply inspired by TNGHT, the duo of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice. “I was raised on TNGHT, that’s like 10% of why I make the music that I make,” she said. Listen to the full episode below.

Recent “Song Exploder” guests include St. Vincent who talked about “New York,” Grizzly Bear who broke down “Four Cypresses,” and Phoenix who dissected “Ti Amo.” Revisit Pitchfork’s interview with Grant Singer about Lorde’s “Green Light” video.
