Elbow are a band synonymous with integrity. Since their debut album, Asleep in the Back, the lads from the north of England secured a fanbase of music geeks who preferred their sounds sensible and sensitive, rather than loud and swaggering. It wasn’t until their Mercury Award-winning album The Seldom Seen Kid, that broader audiences would fall into the mesmerizing lyricism of lead singer Guy Garvey — the man with a voice that breaks the most resilient of hearts.
Refusing to adhere to trends and determined to cut their own path, the band has progressed through their incredible popularity with a singular vision of remaining true to their own gut. On their new album, Little Fictions, the band, now a quartet, once again deliver more of the same standard, but with added honesty, simplicity, and… well, romance.
ARTISTdirect’s Christopher Friedmann caught up with Elbow’s Craig Potter as he took a break in the studio. Conversation turned to band-democracy, the importance of holding back and letting go — and just how it feels when you hear the town hall bells ringing out to the tune of your songs.
