Perhaps unsurprisingly, for those of us following Ed Sheeran‘s recent releases, Spotify has just announced that the singer-songwriter has once again broken streaming records on the platform, with the release of his new album ‘÷’. The album has also broken records for an album’s first-day sales.
Sheeran’s long-awaited third album — his first since June 2014’s ‘x’ — hit both digital and physical shelves on Friday (March 3). The world of Sheeran fans has responded positively to say the least – snatching up physical copies and streaming the songs in unprecedented numbers. Meanwhile bookmakers quickly moved to post ‘÷’ as one of the favorites to be the biggest-selling album of 2017 in the UK.
Early predictions from the bookmakers have been substantiated by hard evidence from Spotify, who have reported that Sheeran’s new album broke streaming records on its first day.
According to the streaming service, ‘÷’ clocked up 56,727,861 streams on Friday — smashing the previous record held by The Weeknd’s recent album, ‘Starboy’ (which generated 29 million streams).
Sheeran has also beaten his own record for the song with the most amount of one-day streams, with his January single ‘Shape of You’ pulling in 10,123,630 plays on Friday — beating the song’s existing one-day record of 7,940,950 streams.
In other encouraging news for Sheeran fans – a recent leak from the records of Glastonbury Festival organizers has the singer listed to perform the Sunday night headline show at this year’s event. Clashfinder has published a list of bands set to play the iconic Pyramid Stage and four other stages. However, the site can be edited by the public, meaning some of the acts listed might be ones fans are hoping will perform.
