iTunes Review
A contemporary pop spin on feel-good, windows-down country, Hero is the debut studio album from Maren Morris. The Texas native cut her teeth writing songs for Tim McGraw and Kelly Clarkson, but her fresh perspectives and knack for radio-ready pop hooks caught the attention of executives in Nashville, and earned her comparisons to crossover stars like Sheryl Crow and Kacey Musgraves. Fittingly, Hero includes Top 40 contenders, like the carefree anthem “80’s Mercedes,” alongside soulful country tributes like “My Church,” a ballad about Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and the healing power of FM radio. “When this wonderful world gets heavy and I need to find my escape,” she sings, “I just keep the wheels rolling, radio scrolling, until my sins wash away.”

Exceptional debut
Maren Morris delivers some exceptional performances of her country-pop-style songwriting on this debut. Prior to “Hero”, Morris wrote several songs for the TV show “Nashville” (My favorite is “This is Real Life”), as well as songs for Tim McGraw (“Last Turn Home”) and Kelly Clarkson (“Second Wind” first appeared on her “Piece by Piece (Deluxe)” album). From her earlier songs, I recommend the co-written “Villain” performed by Lucie Silvas. “My Church” is Morris’s breakthrough single on “Hero” and is a must have track both for performance, style, and songwriting. An exceptional song that didn’t make the final cut was “Company You Keep”, which appeared on her EP that introduced four of the early release tracks on “Hero”. I recommend that fans listen to two other 2016 releases, namely Dierks Bentley’s “I’ll Be the Moon” and Ryan Beaver’s “When This World Ends”, both of which shares vocals with Morris. At the time “Hero” is being released, Morris has given us plenty of evidence to show us that she is at the top of her singing and songwriting craft.
Can’t Wait to Hear More!
It’s like a mix of 2004’s Gretchen Wilson’s unapologetic attitude, a hint of Miranda Lambert’s edge, and extremely, thoughtful, well written, Kacey Musgraves like lyrics. Marren, you won my heart at the first verse of “My Church.”
I can’t wait to hear more of your work in the near, brightly lit future! You are fantastic!

I’ve heard better…
Sorry but compared to the other female country singers out there right now she’s just not that talented in my opinion. I think her songs have more of that older sound and that’s the only reason people like her. Again this is just my opinion but you shouldn’t love one artist and hate all the others just because they won’t sing like how you want them to sing because if every person put out songs like Chris Stapleton and Maren Morris country music would get so boring! There’s room for all types of sounds in country music as long as the people and the lyrics stay country and that’s what it’s all about. Overall though I think this girl is alright but nothing amazing in my opinion.
