An alt-rock institution finds sure footing and fresh starts with producer Danger Mouse. For a big-ticket band, the Chili Peppers remain appealingly stripped-down, mixing their lean, punky approach with disco (“Go Robot”), golden-age hip-hop (“The Getaway”), psychedelia (“This Ticonderoga,” “Detroit”), and slow-burning funk (the Elton John-featuring “Sick Love”). As with the rest of the band’s post-Californication phase, the sound remains rhythmic (credit the skeleton-key wrecking crew of Flea and drummer Chad Smith) but the mood is melancholic, introverted, and a little lovelorn—the reflections of party boys reckoning the bittersweetness of middle age.
Brand Name Status
This band has always been Mexican Coke in the glass bottle with pure cane sugar – BUT – after John Frusciante’s departure they’re starting to sound more like Caffeine Free Diet Coke with Splenda in plastic.
My hopes are high, but I’m guessing I’m going to walk away unrefreshed and slightly sick… I don’t blame them for going on -it’s just kind of sad to hear them mimic themselves. Most “millenials” will give it 5 stars and not know the difference. I guess someone had to take the place of the Rolling Stones ™…
Left still feeling hungry…
I googled Red Hot Chili Peppers New Album 10 million times. Finally a new song! Dark Necessities and I can actually sing the words to Can’t Stop to fleas Bass riff. (Try it) disappointing. Somewhere someone asked are you a John fan or a RHCP fan. I guess you could call me a Red Hot Chilliciante fan. Or a John Hot Chili Pepper fan. I don’t think Johns music is complete without Anthony, Flea, and Chad, but RHCP is not the same without John. Josh does not draw me into the song as Josh did. His playing is very one dimensional, and ask yourself this question. If you took Josh’s guitar parts out of the song, would you miss it? Would you notice? Josh needs to find the emotional connect that John had. This review is based on the one song they let me listen to. I am praying the rest of the album is better, and that Josh can find his connect. My message to the Red Hot Chili Peppers (your fans don’t hate Josh, we just can’t connect to him) please make up with John. I wish Josh could channel us in, but it sounds like fuzz.
Look, if anyone was to replace John it should be josh, he played with John, john practically chose him. He helped on johns solo albums. Josh is here to stay and after hearing his solo in dark necessities I knew he was going to stay for the long haul, you have to remember John left and he may have left before but this time he is gone, and if anyone should replace him it should be josh so quit whining about it and enjoy the music josh is very talented and deserves some recognition.

Few rock groups of the ’80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century. The roots of the band lay in a friendship forged by three school chums, Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak,…
