Epic – Still their best album!

Wow how is it that there are only 8 ratings and 1 review with all of 4 words? This is an epic album by one of the top five or six Celtic bands in music history. To this day i still feel that this is their best album overall with some of their most classic tunes. In fact, it just might be strong enough to be in the top 20 albums of all time regardless of genre. The first four songs on this album make up possibly the strongest opening of any album, ever. This album doesn’t even begin to flag until the song Swagger which felt a little unfinnished – like an early demo of a song.

This album has it all. It features some of Flogging Molly’s best lyrics and their typical great energy level. They are at their best when they have a good balance of classic Celtic with a smaller amount of punk flavor thrown in. Their last album, Speed of Darkness, was more punk with a dramatically lower dose of Celtic and far too protesty to be listened to for a good time. Granted it was needed given the state of the country, but it just wasn’t half as enjoyable as this album.

Hard to find any negatives with this album. They get a little cacophonous at times as the noise gets just a little out of check and drifts towards frenetic punk anger instead of a focus on delivering a well-played and sung tune. They are also so good at delivering upbeat songs, but i honestly wish they would have given us a few more slow ones like If I Ever Leave This World Alive. It’s not only their best song, it’s one of the top 3 songs in the genre and one of the top 5 songs in any genre – all time. It’s one of the biggest reasons that P.S. I Love You is one of my favorite movies.

The stats are off the charts for this album. There’s an unheard of 10 songs at 4 and 5 stars. Most good albums have one, maybe two 5 star songs. Drunken Lullabies has four 5 star songs led by the aforementioned If I Ever Leave and Death Valley Queen with some of my favorite lyrics in any song. There’s six 4 star songs, only one 3 star song in Cruel Mistress and only one weak 2 star song in Bag of Bricks with no throwaways. That’s like 90% great or perfect songs and like 95% good songs. Unbelievable. I’ve never seen an album have only one 3 star song and just one weak song.
