Album Review

Like so many Texan country singers, Cody Johnson doesn’t like to stray far from home. He’s fond of hardwood honky tonk and sultry ballads that suggest another time, sounds that evoke many different eras of Texas country music. Gotta Be Me still manages to sound individualistic because Johnson imprints this album — his fifth, and his second to make its way on the Billboard Country charts — with a sense of personality. He’s not forceful but he doesn’t recede into the background, either. Johnson takes things easy, so easy that his solid songs can sometimes slip by without notice, but that’s also the good thing about Gotta Be Me: it goes down easy, but further inspection reveals its sturdy construction.

Cody Johnson and his band will give you every ounce of energy they have in their shows! I know Cody’s vocals and his songwriting abilities will shine through in this album “Gotta Be Me” after several dozen sold out shows across Texas! He is the most entertaining artist in country music since Garth Brooks! This album will go #1 on iTunes come August because of his fan base! Just watch! We all love COJO!

So excited for the new album. Cojo shows us real country music we haven’t seen since the king himself, George Strait. So much better then all of that country pop stuff Nashville is producing now. Keep it Texas and keep it country y’all!

I’ve been listening to CoJo since about 2010 and I figured it couldn’t get any better than “Cowboy Like Me” but from the 3 songs you get when you pre-order, this one already gives it a run for its money. 5 stars from me already.
